Learning to Play Piano

At Reisinger Conservatory of Music learning to play the piano sets our students up for a life time of enjoyment of music. Our instruction, cultivated over 35 years of schooling, uses the most advanced curriculum for the best results. Our program to enhance the enjoyment of learning includes the following:

One-on-One Instructions

The most effective learning occurs with individual attention. Lesson lengths are twenty minutes, half hour, forty-five minutes, or an hour. Pre-professional students may need to take over an hour lesson length.

Music Theory

All students are required to learn about music theory as it is the backbone of music. Learning theory enhances the students understanding of their music and its creation. Understanding music theory can help students gain a deep appreciation of music.

Ear-training/Sight-reading

It is critical that student learn to play by ear as well as learning how to play at sight. When the student is ready, the teacher will incorporate this part into the lessons. Sight-reading is a vital part of making music. Strong sight reading skills make learning new pieces faster and more efficiently.

Music Appreciation

Our group lessons are offered frequently and cover such topics as composers, music styles, music appreciation, rhythm workshops, composition and ear training classes. This ties in and solidifies learning acquired during lessons. During the group lessons as well as in the individual lesson, students will learn how to listen to and appreciate a wide variety of music.

Workshop/Recitals

Group performance classes are held frequently to help prepare students for recitals and/or public performances. We also provide many additional public performance opportunities for students as well as many adjudicated events on a state and national level. A more formal annual recital takes place at the end of each school year.

PRESCHOOL

Music Lessons

Preschool lessons are available as early as age 3. Programs such as Wunderkeys are incorporated along with Reisinger Conservatory methods for the very young. As students advance in their tactile facility, students may move on to first Piano Adventures or Music for Little Mozart’s.  These programs are age appropriate through the age of 5 or even 6. Parental involvement with practicing is required at this age.

BEGINNER

Music Lessons

Students of any age may enroll in our beginner piano program. Lessons start by introducing the parts of your instrument and the basics of how you produce sound. Depending on your musical goals, you will learn the basics of how to read music and develop a strong sense of rhythm and musicality. Beginning with the very first lesson, students will be playing songs from their books! We aim to instill in all our music students an appreciation for their instrument.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED

Music Lessons

Pick up where you left off, whether you have limited knowledge or a few years under your belt, our music instructors can evaluate your skill and help you improve your performance. Not only will you be able to play more complicated music, but you’ll focus on improving your tone, clarity, rhythm, technique, and performance skills. You will become a critical listener of style (i.e. jazz, rock, and blues). Once you have enough knowledge of your instrument, you will be introduced to improvisation and playing as a soloist.

Did you know?

Learning and mastering a musical instrument improves the way the brain breaks down and understands human language, making music students more apt to pick up a second language.

Children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than their peers who do not participate in music lessons.

Children who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, stay in school, and pursue further education.

With all the important findings above, it only makes sense to introduce music at a young age. We are proud to include Wunderkeys as part of our instruction program! This is a fun, innovative method that is being introduced to preschoolers around the world. Finally — a show stopping method book that will get your 3-4 year old enjoy to play the piano at an early age.
